Skype
A very useful tool for people with family overseas. One of our family members has relatives in Hungary and uses this regularly to keep in contact. At this stage we have no use for this, but possible could in the future, so will keep it in mind.
Final Posting for now
It seems I have come to an end of the program. I will definitely be going back over some of the areas in the future. Thank you to Yarra Plenty Library for the opportunity to investigate all of this new technology.
Second Life
So this is where you go when you no longer want to exist in the real world. The time will come that we will longer have a need to go out of the house. Everything will be able to be done over the internet. A little scary to me. that people can become so engrossed with this sort of thing. Watchoing the video and reading some of the other infor has been enough of an experience of this for me.
I'm afraid another site I don't really need. I can see that it would be great to keep in touch with people travelling or overseas. I searched for lots of people but didn't come up with anyone I knew. My husband has a facebook page, but I gave up searching for him as there were pages and pages of people with the same name. I will go back another day and see if I can customise the search to limit the number. The only search I could find needed a school but as he hasn't entered this info on his page it wasn't easy to find.
Myspace
My teenage daughter spends many hours updating and making her myspace page beautiful. It certainly is very popular amongst teenagers. The kids all seem very aware of the problems that can occur with having details that could possibly be accessed by strangers and have been involved in numerous discussions at school about the dangers. One thing I only just realised was, that you can set your profile to private and only let people you want to view it. Although I like the creative side of myspace and getting the kids computer literate I do wonder if it is all really necessary.

Google maps

This site continuously amazes me. I used to think it was pretty cool when you could only get the top view, but now that you can get the street view it blows my mind. I actually find it a bit creepy to know that anyone anywhere in the world can get a good view of my house by typing in my address. What will they come up with next. It is a useful site for getting detailed instructions when venturing off somewhere new. Like many things on the web I can waste a lot of time looking at all sorts of things.
iGoogle
I have spent the last hour playing around with iGoogle. It is fun to create your own page, but really I don't know if I can really be bothered having it all the time. I can get most of the info with yahoo and not have to do anything. It is good to be able to add direct links to facebook and book search etc. It seems to take a while to download the page and I do wonder how much of my download limit I am using each time. Watching the google video was interesting. I don't know if I would want to work there without a lot of training, I would be totally out of my depth. I have enjoyed doing this course for that reason. It has given me a good insight into all the things available on the web, but has also made me aware of how much I have to learn.
